Some families spend their weekends arguing over where to go. Others hook a boat onto the back of the car and take the argument somewhere with better scenery.

The Australian-made Stacer 589 Crossfire Side Console is built for the second group. At just under six metres, it's big enough for family adventures, fishing trips and a spot of watersports, without requiring a waterfront mansion to park it.

And unlike some boats that seem designed exclusively for catching fish or impressing the neighbours, the Crossfire makes a genuine effort to accommodate everyone.

A Boat That Can't Make Up Its Mind – In a Good Way

Here's where things get interesting.

The Crossfire combines a side-console fishing layout with something resembling a bowrider. Up front, there's seating for relaxing, but add the available infill and the area transforms into a casting platform.

One minute you're cruising with the family, the next you're chasing flathead. It's the boating equivalent of a Swiss Army knife, although considerably more expensive and unlikely to fit in your pocket.

Underneath sits Stacer's Revolution Hull, designed to deliver stability and a comfortable ride. It's an important consideration when the afternoon breeze arrives and the water becomes less cooperative.

The aluminium construction also makes sense for Australian conditions, particularly around boat ramps, estuaries and the occasional less-than-perfect docking manoeuvre.

From Driveway to Waterway

The beauty of a trailer boat is that the holiday starts wherever you decide to launch.

Think Gippsland Lakes, the Murray River, Lake Eildon or a weekend exploring the waterways around Port Stephens.

With the appropriate tow vehicle and trailer, the Crossfire is a realistic proposition for families wanting to combine road trips with boating adventures.

The hull itself weighs approximately 650kg, but remember that's before adding the engine, trailer, fuel, batteries and everything else the family insists is absolutely essential.

Check the complete loaded towing weight before choosing your vehicle. And practise reversing at a quiet ramp before providing free entertainment to everyone waiting behind you.

Stacer is an established Australian aluminium boat brand, with the Crossfire produced by Australian manufacturer Telwater.

One particularly clever detail is the bow arrangement. Rather than forcing buyers to choose between a dedicated fishing boat and a family cruiser, Stacer has combined elements of both.

There's also a live-bait tank, rod holders and a boarding ladder, making the transition from fishing expedition to afternoon swim relatively painless.

For young families, teenagers and active couples who want flexibility rather than a floating lounge room, that versatility is a major selling point.

What We Love – And What We'd Change

We love the adaptable layout, practical aluminium construction and the fact that six people can legally be accommodated under its stated capacity, subject to loading and operating conditions.

The side console also leaves useful space for moving around the boat.

What would we like in the next evolution? More dedicated dry storage for family gear, improved integrated phone charging and perhaps an easier system for converting the forward seating.

Because nobody wants to spend half their boating holiday rearranging cushions.

The Verdict

The Stacer 589 Crossfire isn't trying to be the biggest or flashiest boat at the marina. It's trying to be the one that actually gets used.

For Australian families who love a road trip, a fishing rod and the occasional splash about, that's a pretty compelling argument.

After all, the best family boat isn't necessarily the most expensive one. It's the one that gets everyone off the couch and onto the water.
