Finding an affordable hotel in Tuscany is one thing. Finding one inside a 12th-century fortress, overlooking an ancient town carved into volcanic rock, is quite another.

You cross ancient ramparts and a small bridge before reaching reception beneath the tower. It feels wonderfully dramatic, yet the atmosphere inside is relaxed, intimate and welcoming.

No two rooms at Hotel della Fortezza are exactly the same. Some have exposed timber beams, antique-style furnishings and views across Sorano, while others look over the green Etruscan Valley and the rock-cut necropolis of San Rocco.

Discovering Sorano and Southern Tuscany

Sorano is known as the “Matera of Tuscany” because its stone houses, cellars and pathways appear to merge with the volcanic tuff cliffs beneath them. Its narrow lanes, old gateways and jumbled rooftops feel far removed from Tuscany’s busier tourism centres.

Nearby attractions include the Etruscan Vie Cave, the Città del Tufo Archaeological Park and the remarkable cave settlement of Vitozza. Pitigliano is approximately 10 kilometres or 12 minutes away, while tiny Sovana is around 15 minutes by car. The thermal cascades at Saturnia are roughly 45 minutes away.

Sorano is about two hours from Siena, approximately 2¼ hours from Florence and a little over two hours from Rome, making Hotel della Fortezza an excellent stop on a self-drive holiday through central Italy.

The best times to visit are late April to June and September to October, when the Tuscan countryside is colourful, temperatures are comfortable and the summer crowds have eased.

Book at least two nights and request a room overlooking either Sorano or the Etruscan Valley. Arrive before sunset, leave the car at the free San Marco parking area and enjoy an evening drink in the fortress square.
